Top 10 Best Inverters for Home Use in India

Since the discovery of electricity, we have been so dependent on the use of electricity that we can’t imagine our lives without it.

Who knew that a motor generator that was developed during World War II to convert DC power to AC, would be still around today?

In this age of digitization and electronic dependency, an inverter is a device that is not only essential, but also a very common commodity in our homes.

Inverters come to the rescue when there is an undesirable power interruption. They are suitable for every home which cannot harbor big generators.

Inverters are economical devices, but choosing the right one can be a quite difficult choice.

For this purpose, we have specially brought you this article that will help you make the best choice among a range of products that are available in the market.

Right from an inverter’s working to the buying guide and reviews of some of the best products in the market, you will find everything here.

How to Choose an Inverter for Home in India? – Buying guide

Now that we have covered everything about the types and the working of the inverter that is considered some points that you must keep in mind while buying the ideal inverter for your homes.

Know your power requirement

Electricity usage of common household appliances

It is very important to determine what will be your power requirement whenever you are considering buying an inverter.

This will help you a lot to make the best purchase.

In general the power requirement of some commonly used home appliances such as a fan, tube light and LED bulb and a television vary from 20 over 120 watts.

So considering how many appliances you are planning to use you must be able to determine your power requirement.

This will go a long way in ensuring that you do not have a dearth of the power requirement and all of your appliances are supported properly.

See the Inverter capacity

Usually the inverter capacity is directly proportional to whatever the load that you want it to support. You can utilize the accurate formula for this purpose.

To do this, simply divide the total load that is to be supported by the power factor. What you want to do is balance the energy efficiency by dividing it with the power factor.

An inverter capacity is measured in volts ampere. So whenever you are planning to buy an inverter, always check for the inverter capacity, choose the nearest one that matches this capacity and your power requirement.

Check your home wiring

Man checking the home electricity wiring

We cannot stress enough how important this point is. In case you want to provide a backup for a very large home, you will also require a very large size battery and inverter for it.

Many times people only want the backup for certain appliances and not the entire home. In such conditions, the wiring of your home should be such that it allows you to run only a few selected appliances on the inverter.

Hence it is advisable to first consult your electrician about the wiring and if it is insufficient you must get it properly checked and corrected.

A very high power is needed for bigger appliances such as an AC or a refrigerator. So you must exclude these types of big appliances from the inverter wiring.

You might as well need extra wiring in case it does not match your inverter capacity.

Inverter VA vs Batter WA

Another important fact that you should consider while buying an inverter is the inverter VA and the battery WA. Usually, a battery capacity will always be more than an inverter capacity.

major difference between the two is that a battery capacity is the amount that can be stored and an inverter capacity is how much amount of power one can serve at a single time.

That should be a proper match between the battery capacity and the inverter capacity. If these two factors do not match then you cannot support big appliances or for that matter any appliances to work efficiently for you.

Various types of batteries that come with inverter :-

Maintenance free batteries

Maintenance free batteries do not need any distilled water to be filled at regular intervals in them. They contain a special type of electrolyte which does not need to be replenished.

These types of batteries are best suited for the people who do not like the maintenance work a lot and also for elderly and busy people.

They are also known as sealed or deep cycle SMS sealed maintenance free or value regulated lead acid batteries. Generally, you may not find many brands manufacturing this type of battery, however, brands like Luminous and Okaya still sell these types of batteries.

They may be difficult to find in the market, but if you look carefully, there is a good chance that you may find one. The disadvantage of these types of batteries is that they have a very short battery life and are a bit on the expensive side.

Tubular batteries

As name suggests tubular batteries are shaped like a tube. They are relatively low maintenance batteries and are very efficient compared to a flat plate battery.

Tubular Batteries

Their battery life can last up to as long as 5 years because they have a very efficient charging cycle. This efficiency is achieved because of its particular design which involves a positive plate that is replaced with the tube and is protected by a cloth.

This positive plate decays as the time passes. As the decay process is extremely slow, the lifespan of the battery increases to a large extent.

They come with an added advantage of less current wastage, thus enabling lesser electricity bills in the long-term. On the other side, they release some harmful gases and there is a requirement for ventilation, apart from them being bulky in size.

Brands like Amaron, Exide, Luminous and Sukam have great quality tubular batteries that can cost you anywhere between 8000 to 25000 rupees.

Lead acid batteries

Lead acid batteries contain two electrodes which are dipped in an electrolyte solution. The electrodes used in the lead acid battery are lead electrode and lead dioxide.

A sulfuric acid electrolytic solution is utilised in these types of batteries to react with the electrodes causing a chemical reaction that generates a DC current.

The advantage of this type of battery is that the chemical reactions taking place inside it are reversible or irreversible, making it rechargeable.

It can be concluded that flat plate batteries and tubular batteries are also types of lead acid batteries. Almost all the manufacturers manufacture lead acid batteries and hence they are very easily available in the market.

Safety

There is no doubt that whenever buying and electrical device safety is of utmost importance. It is advisable that one buys a sine wave inverter for the reasons of safety and longevity of the appliances.

Other types of inverters are cheaper than a sine wave inverter but in terms of safety they are not much reliable.

Other important points that must be kept in mind are earthing issues and issues such as electrocution and short circuits. If your home does not have proper earthing, then it is very likely that you will face issues in terms of safety while using the inverter.

Always go for an inverter that is safe and reliable and which has very few water spillage issues. Rust or corrosion can affect the socket connections posing a threat to the safety of the user.

Backup duration

The very purpose of an inverter is to provide a good backup. If the backup of your inverter is not good, then you are clearly going to face issues while using it.

The number of backups you need increases the required battery size.

In general, a power requirement of 600 Watts needs a backup of 2 hours and similarly a power requirement of 900 to 1000 watts needs up to 2 to 3 hours of backup respectively.

To determine the backup duration you must realize your power requirement carefully. In general, for this backup duration you will be needing a suggested battery size of 100ah to about 250 ah.

Warranty

While buying any electronic device, the warranty is always an important aspect and it is no different for an inverter.

Always go for the inverter having a longer warranty than the others, even if that means spending some extra amount on the purchase.

An inverter should be able to work properly for about 2 to 3 years and have the warranty for a minimum of 3 years.

During this duration, if you face any issues with the inverter you can easily get it replaced for any malfunctions. Always read the labels very carefully as ,many times, manufacturers clearly specify that the replacement is up to their jurisdiction.

It is advisable that you always ask about the warranty period of the inverter.

Inverter Price

As discussed previously, price is an important factor which varies depending upon which brand of inverter you are buying and also the type of the inverter.

Well known brands such as Amaron, Exide, Luminous, have very good inverter batteries and hence are costly.

The price of an inverter also depends on the capacity, warranty and the dealer. You may also consider replacing your old batteries and sell them back to the dealer and get some discount on the new battery.

In case you want a longer warranty period the price will also go up. For instance, a 150ah tubular battery that has a replacement period of 3 years can cost you anywhere between 14000 to 18000 rupees. But the same may cause you less than that if the warranty period is only two years.

Many times manufacturers and dealers also include the cost of transportation and installation along with it. Therefore you must verify from your dealer about this also.

You should be able to get a flat plate battery starting from 9000 to 12000. On the other hand tubular batteries may cost you anywhere between 8000 to 18000.

Maintenance free batteries have a price range between 11000 to 20000. Depending upon your requirement choose the inverters properly even if you may have to pay a little bit more.

How does an inverter work?

Most of the devices in the modern era run on AC (alternative current).

There are certain devices however, that require DC power (direct current) but have to take it from AC sources. This needs an additional piece of equipment called the rectifier for this conversion.

Direct current flows in one direction only while in alternating current, the electrons alternate in forward and backward direction.

Most of the devices that we use at home take power from the DC sources but require an AC to operate. But the biggest issue is that, AC cannot be stored while DC can be.

So whenever AC is needed , it has to be converted from DC.

This is achieved by using an inverter which basically acts as a switching unit that is connected to a transformer, which is a device that changes a low voltage AC to a high voltage AC or vice versa.

So, in an inverter, a switching mechanism such as an electric motor reverses or flips the incoming DC back and forth more often to generate a variable AC. The variation required can be in the intensity of voltage, frequency or phase.

Types of Inverter

Not all the inverters are the same.

They are classified on the basis of their output, type of load, source and other things. Let us understand in detail about this below –

Types of inverters, as per their working method

Grid-tie inverter

These types of inverters convert DC into AC that is ideal for injecting into an electrical power grid. They should accurately match the phase and voltage of the grid to do so.

Grid inverters make use of perfectly matched and lined up output voltage and current that helps in maintaining the output voltage slightly higher than the grid voltage.

They are so designed that, in case of the utility grid going down, they can quickly disconnect from it.

A properly configured grid tie inverter will help any household to take the AC power from a solar or a wind power system, without having to use any large scale rewiring and batteries.

They can be utilized in electrical power generators, solar panels, wind and hydroelectric panels etc.

Stand alone inverters

Stand alone inverter is basically an off the grid electricity system for the locations which are not suited for distribution of electricity. These types of inverters involve Different methods for electricity generation.

We can utilize of photovoltaic system using solar panels, geothermal source, diesel or bio-fuel generator and thermo-electric generators extra.

There are two major types of stand alone photo all type power systems. one is a direct coupled system that consists of a solar panel connected directly to a DC load while the other one is a stand alone system with batteries.

The primary function of a Storage battery in a stand-alone photovoltaic system is to store energy when there is an excess available and to provide it whenever required.

Other functions include voltage and current stabilization and supplying search current to loads such as Motors whenever needed.

Square wave inverter

Very few people understand the difference between a sine wave inverter and Square wave inverter.

Square wave inverters are usually used to supply Motors alone while a sign wave inverter is used to support household appliances.

Square wave inverters generally produce a loud noise when they are in use and are less expensive than the Sine wave inverters. Square wave inverters will be helpful while running simple tools with Universal Motors without any problem.

Modified sine wave inverter

These types of inverters are suitable when the electronic devices do not have any delicate electronic systems embedded within them.

You may consider devices such as old TVs and Motors with brushes, modified sine wave inverter is usually ok with these types of devices.

But on the other hand if you want to use digital devices such as a digital clock, then a modified sine wave inverter might not be a good idea. There is a full range of modern appliances that will not work well with this type of inverter.

This can include your laptop computers, cordless tools, digital clocks with radios, medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, laser printers and photocopiers and other devices having complicated circuitry.

Considering the cost, generally, modified sine wave inverters are less expensive than a pure sine wave one.

Pure sine wave inverter

To understand in a simple language, a pure sine wave inverter has a sine waveform like the sine waveform of the mains voltage.

The advantages of using a pure sine wave inverter are many. They have very low harmonic distortion and are efficient in reducing audible and electrical noise in appliances like fans, audio or amplifiers and TV.

Appliances like microwave ovens and motors run faster and cooler with a pure sine wave inverter. Many people nowadays use a pure sine wave inverter for their appliances.

The input voltage, output voltage and the overall operation and power handling depends on the specific device on the circuitry of the pure sine wave inverter.

Tips to Care for Inverter and Inverter battery

After making a purchase of an inverter, you must also know how to take proper care of the inverter.

The battery is the backbone of an inverter and regular maintenance and care of the battery is very crucial. Here are some battery maintenance tips that will be very useful for you in the long run –

You must clean the surface and the sides of the battery regularly and keep it dust free. For this purpose, you can use any cotton cloth or a duster. Keeping your battery clean will help you in increasing its performance and lifespan and will also avoid corrosion.

Keep it corrosion free

Talking about corrosion, if at all the terminals get corroded you can use a solution of baking soda and hot water and apply it on the corroded area using any toothbrush or any other cleaning equipment.

After the rust has been completely removed apply some Vaseline or petroleum jelly on the corroded area. This will prevent further corrosion and ensure that your battery lasts longer.

Keep eye on blocked vent in battery

A blocked vent in the battery will lead to accumulation of hydrogen gas inside it. This is very dangerous as your battery may burst because of the accumulation of hydrogen gas.

Always check for these blocked vents and get it repaired or replaced from time to time.

Keep it hydrated

The water level of the battery is very crucial. One must ensure that the water level of the battery is checked every 2 months and it is properly maintained to its maximum and minimum water limit.

Tap water or rain water is not suitable in the battery as they contain impurities and unwanted minerals that affect the battery performance. Only distilled water should be utilized to top up the battery.

Use well-ventilated area

Ventilation is very important while you are installing an inverter. The inverter battery tends to get heated up during the charging operation.

In such a case, a properly ventilated area will resolve the heating issues and you will be able to use your inverter properly.

Regularly use the battery

When the installation is complete you must regularly use the battery. If there is no power cut, the battery should be discharged at least once in a month and recharged again.

By doing this the inverter will give you its optimum performance.

Inspect & replace the battery (if required)

Your battery must regularly be inspected and updated from time to time. If the battery is dead or damaged, it should be replaced within the warranty period.

In case the warranty period has expired, always replace it with genuine parts as using any other parts may damage the equipment.

Store at safe place

It is recommended that you keep your inverter batteries away from any flammable objects.

Volatile and Flammable objects can catch fire and set the inverter battery as well on fire which can lead to short circuit issues and big problems .

Only connect proper loading devices

For ensuring top class performance from your inverter batteries, it is recommended that you make sure that there is a proper loading of devices.

We must not connect several high power devices to a single battery. This can overload your batteries and strain them causing them to get damaged before time.

Connect to manufacturer’s service

Apart from taking care on your own, sometimes the battery may need some assistance from the manufacturer. Always feel free to contact and ask your queries to the manufacturers and get help from them from time to time.

FAQs about Inverter

1. Does an inverter increase electricity bill?

This is the most common question that everyone faces.

When the inverter is working or functioning, it practically does not affect the power bills as the inverter output is connected to the wiring of your house after the metre box. But when the batteries of the inverter are charging itself, they consume some amount of power that may affect your electricity bill.

The bill will increase as the batteries begin to age. Therefore a proper and regular maintenance of batteries would prevent them from charging in excess or in a lower amount.

In other cases, if you charge the battery from the utility grid it will definitely raise the electricity bill because there is a loss of power in the usage of the inverter.

In the case of PV powered homes, there is no rise in the bill. Using net metering you can lower your electricity bill .

2. Inverter vs UPS – what’s the difference?

Many a times we might get confused between the two, but the major difference between an inverter and a UPS lies in the switching mechanism that both possess.

The switch over from the mains supply to the battery takes place immediately in case of the UPS whereas in case of an inverter, it takes time.

Another major difference includes in the functioning.

An inverter’s main function is to convert AC power to DC power, while a UPS acts as a flywheel storage system. The power supplied by the UPS is of short duration while the power supplied by an inverter is of long duration.

Inverters are only suitable for domestic use, however, a UPS can be used for both , domestic as well as industrial use.

3. What are the most common reasons for inverters not working?
